The 2026 Manufacturing Protect Brief from SonicWall reveals that factory floors are increasingly exposed as they integrate remote monitoring and automated maintenance tools. This connectivity creates a seamless path for attackers; a single compromised password can now serve as a gateway from a standard office computer directly to critical production machinery. The threat is compounded by the persistent use of outdated IoT hardware that remains unpatched years after vulnerabilities are disclosed.

Data from over one million global sensors highlights the scale of this architectural flaw. A five-year-old vulnerability in Hikvision IP cameras alone generated 43 million hits in the first half of 2026, marking it as the industry’s most significant IoT threat. Furthermore, the sector recorded the highest detection rate for SCADA attacks among all industries tracked by the firm. According to Michael Crean, SVP of Managed Services at SonicWall, the issue is not a lack of technical sophistication but a failure of network design. Without implementing Zero Trust principles—which restrict access to specific applications rather than providing blanket network entry—manufacturers remain uniquely susceptible to operational shutdowns caused by simple credential theft.
