The Phoenix-based university now incorporates preparation for CompTIA, ISC2, and AWS certifications into its Bachelor of Science in Cybersecurity and various certificate tracks. Unlike traditional models that merely align course material with industry standards, GCU’s approach integrates hands-on exam readiness into the coursework and provides students with exam-fee vouchers. These vouchers can offset costs by up to $878 per pathway, a significant reduction given that independent certification testing can exceed $2,700.
Paul Lambertson, Dean of the College of Engineering and Technology, noted that employers increasingly prioritize candidates who possess both academic degrees and verified technical certifications. By streamlining this process, the university aims to bridge the gap between graduation and professional readiness. While the exams remain optional, students who complete them may also receive academic credit for their certification preparation, creating a dual incentive for completion.
