Substack is introducing a transparency feature that identifies the extent of AI involvement in newsletters, comments, and posts. By integrating the detection software Pangram, the platform aims to distinguish human-authored work from automated text, allowing readers to see an estimate of how much AI contributed to a specific piece of writing.

The tool functions within the Substack app for any content exceeding 100 characters. While the move risks exposing creators who rely heavily on automation, Substack CEO Chris Best views it as a way to protect the value of original ideas. He argues that software should handle the logistics of publishing, but the core creative labor must remain human. The company is not banning AI; rather, it is pushing for disclosure. Writers can add an optional AI Author’s note to explain their process, while publishers retain the ability to scan drafts and challenge potential detection errors before their work goes live.

This shift aligns Substack with a broader trend across media platforms to label automated content. From social media sites flagging synthetic images to music services monitoring AI-generated tracks, the industry is increasingly focused on provenance. By providing these insights, Substack hopes to curb the spread of low-quality automated output and maintain the integrity of its independent ecosystem.
