House Poised to Advance Controversial US-Israel Military Integration
A bipartisan push to strike Section 219 from the 2027 National Defense Authorization Act has stalled, clearing the way for a vote that would merge critical American and Israeli defense supply chains. Critics, including Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, argue the move poses an existential threat to US sovereignty and democratic oversight.
Rep. Thomas Massie and Rep. Ro Khanna led an effort to strip the provision from the NDAA, but the House Rules Committee denied the amendment a floor vote. Supporters of the effort argue that the integration of defense sectors creates a dangerous feedback loop where Israeli-backed manufacturing jobs on US soil grant foreign entities undue influence over American political decisions. Former State Department official Josh Paul warned that alternative amendments, such as one offered by Rep. Anna Paulina Luna to simply remove the word "integration" from the text, are purely performative and fail to address the core policy change. With similar language appearing in the Senate’s version of the defense package, opponents now look to the upcoming conference committee as their final opportunity to block the measure.
