Southern Glazer’s South Carolina Employees Join Teamsters

More than 100 warehouse staff and drivers at Southern Glazer’s Wine & Spirits in South Carolina have officially secured union representation. By utilizing the card check process, the workforce bypassed a traditional election, opting to join Local 509 to address long-standing grievances regarding compensation and workplace conditions.

The newly organized group includes Class A and B drivers, warehouse associates, custodians, and various lead roles. This move aligns the South Carolina facility with a broader national trend, as the International Brotherhood of Teamsters has now organized over 5,000 employees across the distributor’s network. Jeff Padellaro, director of the Teamsters Brewery, Bakery, and Soft Drink Conference, stated that the group sought the same gains their colleagues at other facilities had already achieved through collective bargaining.

For warehouse worker Lyrone Harrison, the decision was a response to years of stagnant wages despite high production demands. He noted that staff felt consistently undervalued by management, prompting the drive for unionization. Local 509 President Brian Clardy indicated that the union is now preparing to enter negotiations for an initial contract, marking a shift in the facility's labor relations as the new members push for improved standards.
