Owen Lewis, a 2026 San Jose High School graduate, received the Robert E. DeBarr Memorial Scholarship for Leadership Skills. Lewis, who plans to study engineering at UC Santa Cruz this fall, earned the recognition for his technical contributions to his high school’s robotics program and his volunteer work as a youth mentor. His track record of prioritizing team success over individual accolades aligned with the values of the memorial fund.

Sonia Kumar was awarded the Richard Busse Memorial Scholarship for Community Commitment. Bound for UC Santa Barbara to pursue a degree in computer engineering, Kumar distinguished herself through an internship with the American Red Cross, where she developed a web application to connect disaster victims with resources. Her portfolio also includes roles as a varsity tennis co-captain and founder of the Art for Activism Club. Andrea Brewer, President and CEO of PremierOne, noted that both recipients demonstrate a rare combination of academic rigor and a genuine desire to improve the lives of others.
