Mapfre Seals $1.54 Billion Acquisition of Safety Insurance

Shares of Safety Insurance surged 38% to $100.99 in after-hours trading following the announcement. The deal, priced at $105 per share, is slated to close in the first quarter of 2027, pending regulatory approvals and standard closing conditions. Safety will retain its established brand identity while gaining access to Mapfre’s technological infrastructure and broader financial reserves.

The acquisition comes shortly after AM Best adjusted its outlook for Safety to negative, citing concerns over rising loss severity and the financial impact of weather-related events. Despite the outlook revision, the ratings agency affirmed the company's long-term issuer credit and financial strength ratings, providing a backdrop for the transition into Mapfre’s global network.
