The arrival of the Orbis Flying Eye Hospital in Da Nang marks a thirty-year milestone in a partnership aimed at transforming Vietnam’s eye care infrastructure. By shifting focus from direct intervention to locally led expertise, the initiative now supports professional training and advanced medical access for nine million people across the region.
Vietnam has increasingly become a regional leader in ophthalmology, with a growing emphasis on artificial intelligence for early screening and evidence-based research. Long-time partner FedEx continues to provide the essential logistical backbone for these missions, including the aircraft itself and the volunteer pilots who navigate it. Since its inception in the country in 1996, the collaboration has resulted in the training of 40,000 specialists and the delivery of over 139,000 sight-saving surgeries, effectively embedding sustainable care models within the Vietnamese health system.
