When a single power line failed near Washington, D.C. this week, the regional grid did not just lose a connection; it lost 3.49 gigawatts of demand in minutes. As data centers simultaneously switched to backup power, they triggered a massive voltage spike that rippled from Northern Virginia to Chicago.

The incident serves as a warning for the PJM Interconnection, which manages power for 67 million customers. While the grid avoided a total blackout, lights flickered across the region as the sudden disappearance of 3% of total demand caused supply to surge. Experts, including Ricardo de Azevedo of ON.Energy, describe this as a canary in the coal mine for a sector where power consumption is ballooning. The issue stems from automated safety protocols: when data centers sense a voltage dip, they disconnect from the grid to protect internal equipment. Because these facilities often react to the same stimuli at the same time, they create a cascade effect that destabilizes the entire network.

Solutions are emerging, though they require significant infrastructure changes. Ali Zain Banatwala of the Independent Electricity System Operator suggests that data centers must implement sequential disconnection protocols to prevent massive, simultaneous load shedding. Other firms are looking toward battery-backed uninterruptible power supplies that act as a buffer between the grid and the servers. These systems allow facilities to absorb fluctuations rather than cutting ties with the power supply. With data centers projected to account for 24% of PJM’s load by 2040, the current reactive approach is becoming unsustainable. Grid operators like ERCOT have already begun mandating that large-scale users prove they can ride through minor disruptions without abandoning the grid.
