The $9 physical key designed to break your social media addiction

Most digital screen-time blockers fail because they rely on the same willpower they aim to replace. The Autonomous Key shifts the burden from your mind to your environment, using a physical NFC tag to gatekeep distracting applications and force a deliberate hurdle between you and your digital impulses.

The device operates through a companion app that restricts access to selected programs until the key is scanned against your smartphone. By storing the key in a different room or at a separate location, you transform a mindless habit into a conscious effort. Each session grants up to 60 minutes of access before the lock re-engages, effectively curbing the urge to scroll through platforms like TikTok or Instagram.

At a price point of $9, the device significantly undercuts rivals such as Brick, Unpluq, and Blok, which can cost up to $59. While it lacks some advanced features like dedicated sleep modes, it provides AI-driven usage tracking that monitors your habits with a notably cynical personality. If you struggle to stay away, the app may mock your lack of discipline and suggest relocating the key to a more inconvenient spot.

Compatibility extends to Android 8.0 and iOS 15 or later, with the hardware shipping in five distinct colors. The system is not without flaws; early testing reveals that the NFC sensor occasionally requires multiple scans to register. Furthermore, the company is still refining a backup method for users who misplace their physical key. Currently in beta following a successful Kickstarter campaign, the project offers a subscription-free alternative for those seeking to reclaim their attention span without recurring monthly costs.
