West Bank Violence Surges as Netanyahu Prepares for Trump Meeting

Over the weekend, armed settlers moved through more than a dozen Palestinian communities, torching property and vandalizing infrastructure. The unrest followed the deaths of two Israelis in the village of Tell, a site where a previous attack by settlers had already claimed the lives of four Palestinians. The United Nations reports that over 150 such incidents involving property damage or loss of life have occurred this month, with the Palestinian Health Ministry confirming 21 deaths at the hands of settlers so far this year.

Senior members of the Israeli government have openly encouraged the escalation. Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich suggested that Tell should be leveled, while Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir advocated for bulldozing homes. While the military has conducted raids in over 20 towns, arresting 130 Palestinians, only two settlers have been detained. Analysts like Shaiel Ben-Ephraim argue this is a deliberate strategy to provoke a military response that facilitates further territorial annexation.

Global reaction has been sharp. UN special rapporteur Francesca Albanese labeled the attacks as "pogroms," and officials from Jordan, Qatar, and Spain have demanded accountability. Meanwhile, an influential group of nearly 600 former Israeli security officials urged the incoming Trump administration to pressure Netanyahu to halt the violence, warning that the current chaos risks igniting the entire region.
