Thea Energy secures $20M ARPA-E grant for fusion magnet production

Fusion startup Thea Energy has secured a $20 million grant from the Department of Energy’s ARPA-E division to scale the manufacturing of its modular high-temperature superconducting magnets. The funding provides a critical financial buffer for the company as it attempts to lower the prohibitive costs associated with stellarator reactor construction.

Magnetic confinement reactors rely on intense fields to compress plasma, a process that historically demands expensive, custom-built magnets to match the complex geometry of stellarator designs. Thea Energy is attempting to bypass these manufacturing hurdles by utilizing a modular approach. Instead of bespoke parts, the company employs four primary templates for its 12 main magnets and relies on over 300 identical smaller units to stabilize the plasma.

By treating these smaller magnets like pixels on a display and governing them through proprietary software, the company believes it can achieve more forgiving construction tolerances. This strategy is central to their long-term roadmap, which targets the launch of a commercial-scale fusion power plant by the mid-2040s. The new federal award follows a significant capital infusion for the startup, which closed a $100 million round in May, building on a $20 million Series A raised earlier in 2024.
