Iridium and SKYWAVE Partner to Expand Industrial IoT Connectivity

Iridium Communications and SKYWAVE, an ORBCOMM company, have entered a strategic partnership to integrate Iridium’s LEO satellite network into SKYWAVE’s industrial IoT platform. The collaboration aims to provide heavy equipment manufacturers with seamless connectivity, enabling reliable remote monitoring and predictive maintenance across global, disconnected operating environments.

Iridium and SKYWAVE Partner to Expand Industrial IoT Connectivity

Heavy equipment manufacturers often struggle with fragmented communications infrastructure, which hampers asset visibility and delays service responses in remote locations. By embedding Iridium’s Short Burst Data services directly into SKYWAVE satellite IoT terminals, the partnership offers a unified approach to multi-network management. This integration allows OEMs to route data across satellite, cellular, and Wi-Fi networks, ensuring equipment remains connected regardless of its geographic deployment.

Matt Desch, CEO of Iridium, emphasized that the collaboration leverages the company’s pole-to-pole LEO network to support mission-critical operations in demanding environments. Sameer Agrawal, CEO of ORBCOMM, noted that the initiative serves as an intelligent networking layer, helping manufacturers modernize legacy fleets and scale digital capabilities. While the initial focus targets heavy equipment, the underlying architecture is designed for future expansion into other industrial sectors requiring high-reliability connectivity beyond the reach of terrestrial networks.
