California Cannabis Dispensary Debuts RFID Self-Checkout

Patrons at Perfect Union Northside in Sacramento are now using self-checkout kiosks to purchase cannabis, marking the first time the California Department of Cannabis Control has authorized RFID-powered technology for retail floor operations in the state's highly regulated market.

The Sacramento dispensary, operated by MWG Holdings Group, secured regulatory approval after an observation period confirmed that the EXO self-checkout system maintains full compliance with state mandates. The technology interfaces directly with the store's point-of-sale platform and Metrc, the state's mandatory track-and-trace system, ensuring that every transaction meets legal reporting requirements.

By utilizing RFID tags, the system identifies multiple items simultaneously, which eliminates the need for manual barcode scanning. Beyond accelerating the checkout process for customers, the integration provides staff with real-time inventory tracking and enhanced loss prevention capabilities. MWG Holdings CEO Tom Sheridan noted that the implementation reflects a broader shift toward integrating mainstream retail technologies into the cannabis sector. Developed in partnership with Treez and Riot Insight, the platform aims to standardize high-efficiency retail practices across the industry.
