Ten months into a purported ceasefire, medical aid organization Doctors Without Borders (MSF) reports that the violence in Gaza has not ceased but merely shifted. With fresh airstrikes hitting the Nuseirat refugee camp this week, the group warns that the conflict remains a systematic campaign of destruction against the Palestinian population.
The medical charity, also known as Médecins Sans Frontières, asserts that the current environment is calibrated to maintain Palestinian suffering while avoiding international scrutiny. Since the October 7, 2023, Hamas-led attacks, Israeli forces have killed more than 73,300 Palestinians and wounded over 174,000, according to local figures. Even after the ceasefire agreement was reached nine months ago, at least 1,200 more deaths have been documented.
The Reality of Life Under Siege
Beyond the immediate threat of airstrikes, survivors face a humanitarian collapse. Nearly all of Gaza's 2 million residents have been forcibly displaced, with many confined to an ever-shrinking 30% of the territory. MSF reports that arbitrary evacuation orders are being used as a tool of psychological warfare. Within overcrowded, makeshift shelters, conditions are dire; scabies, respiratory infections, and insect-borne diseases are rampant as infrastructure, including hospitals, remains a target.
In a harrowing 48-hour window this July, MSF teams treated victims of strikes near an Al-Mawasi clinic and a funeral in Al-Nuseirat, the latter of which killed eight people, including the son of an MSF staff member. The organization further notes that humanitarian aid is being used as an instrument of oppression. Despite international legal obligations to ensure access to food and medicine, Israel continues to restrict supplies. As residents in neighborhoods like Zeitoun describe a cycle of endless displacement, MSF maintains that the current state of affairs is not a pause in hostilities, but a reinforced confinement that defies justification.
