San Antonio Surgeon Adopts Non-Opioid Medication for Cosmetic Recovery

After two decades of refining cosmetic surgical techniques, San Antonio-based plastic surgeon Dr. Gary Lawton is integrating the non-opioid medication JOURNAVX into his postoperative protocols. The move aims to address patient concerns regarding recovery comfort while significantly reducing the reliance on traditional narcotic pain management following major body-contouring procedures.

San Antonio Surgeon Adopts Non-Opioid Medication for Cosmetic Recovery

Lawton, a Yale-trained surgeon with over 25 years of experience, began utilizing the drug for patients undergoing abdominoplasty and complex mommy makeovers. Unlike traditional narcotics, JOURNAVX targets NaV1.8 sodium channels in the peripheral nervous system, a mechanism that avoids opioid receptor activation. Clinical data indicates that patients using this protocol require fewer rescue medications and reach recovery milestones with greater ease.

For Lawton, whose practice in San Antonio handles a high volume of breast and body procedures, the shift represents a departure from incremental advancements in pain control. By incorporating this medication, he reports that patients experience less discomfort during the immediate postoperative window. Moving forward, the practice intends to track patient-reported outcomes and pain scores to further refine the integration of this new drug class into standard cosmetic recovery care.
