Lawmakers Face Scrutiny Over SpaceX Stock Purchases

Six members of Congress or their immediate families acquired between $83,000 and $245,000 in SpaceX stock within a week of the company’s June 12 initial public offering, sparking renewed debate over legislative ethics and the potential for conflicts of interest within federal oversight committees.

Lawmakers Face Scrutiny Over SpaceX Stock Purchases

The lawmakers—Reps. William Timmons, John McGuire, Dan Meuser, Gil Cisneros, Jared Moskowitz, and John James—purchased the shares shortly after the company went public. While these transactions were legal and there is no evidence of insider trading, five of the representatives serve on committees that oversee SpaceX’s core interests, including defense, satellite operations, and federal contracting.

Rep. Pramila Jayapal cited the report as evidence that congressional stock trading should be banned, arguing that members are prioritizing personal profit over their constituents. Although the House recently passed the Stop Insider Trading Act, current regulations remain focused on disclosure rather than prohibition. Previous legislative efforts, such as the Restore Trust in Congress Act and the ETHICS Act, sought to bar members and their families from holding individual stocks, but those measures have yet to become law.

This controversy arrives as SpaceX navigates heightened regulatory tension. The company faces ongoing legal challenges from environmental groups regarding Starship launch impacts on Texas wildlife refuges and criticism from astronomers over the Starlink constellation's orbital clutter. Furthermore, questions persist regarding the company’s influence in Washington, following reports that former employees from Musk-led companies were assigned to at least 15 executive branch agencies during 2025.
