TerraCycle Launches National Recycling Program for Vape Waste

The new turnkey service targets households, municipalities, and businesses, offering prepaid containers that bypass the dangers of standard trash disposal. Lithium-ion batteries found in these devices often trigger fires when crushed in garbage trucks or compactors, a hazard that has made improper vape disposal a growing regulatory concern. TerraCycle’s process involves disassembling devices for material recovery, while nicotine pods are handled through specialized, legally compliant incineration.

Customers can select from three container sizes, ranging from 1.25 to 5 gallons, capable of holding between 30 and 155 devices. For larger entities, the company provides pallet-based shipping options. This U.S. expansion follows the success of the firm’s 'VapeCycle' program in New Zealand, where over one million devices have been diverted from landfills to date. The initiative is part of a broader push by the company to address more than 400 waste streams that standard municipal recycling programs currently cannot process.
