Coalition of 22 Organizations Demands Passage of Veterans Reform Package

The proposed legislation, filed as S. 4744 and H.R. 9237, seeks to modernize support systems that have remained stagnant for decades. Key provisions include increasing compensation for catastrophically injured service members and expanding mental health and suicide-prevention initiatives. Notably, the bill aims to resolve the "wounded veteran tax" and bolster resources for caregivers and survivors, groups that have seen little legislative improvement since 1993.

While some debate persists regarding the bill's funding mechanisms, the coalition argues that the Department of Veterans Affairs is already moving to revise disability rating calculations. Without this act, the savings generated by those administrative changes would revert to the Treasury. By passing the package, those funds would be redirected back into support programs for the estimated 32 million veterans, service members, and their families who rely on them. The coalition, which includes The American Legion, the Wounded Warrior Project, and the Elizabeth Dole Foundation, insists that these long-overdue reforms must be prioritized over procedural disagreements.
