The proposal follows a 2025 executive order designed to stimulate the commercial space sector, a move that has drawn scrutiny due to Elon Musk’s close ties to the administration and his former role leading the Department of Government Efficiency.

Legal and ethical concerns are mounting as the proposal faces a 30-day public comment period. Recent reports indicate that several lawmakers responsible for regulating the industry hold financial stakes in SpaceX, fueling allegations of conflicts of interest. The administration’s push coincides with ongoing litigation regarding the transfer of federal wildlife refuge land in South Texas to SpaceX for launch operations, highlighting the increasing friction between commercial space ambitions and conservation efforts.
