Louisiana Restores Legendary Pelto Island Fishing Grounds

The restoration project, officially dubbed the ConocoPhillips Pelto Island Reef, serves to reverse decades of subsidence and storm damage that threatened to swallow the site entirely. Crews spent the summer clearing historic pilings and metal debris, reshaping the remaining rock into a foundation for new marine life. This week, the effort culminated in the installation of 650 Natrx ExoForm reef modules, manufactured locally in Amelia, Louisiana.

Unlike traditional engineering projects, the reef’s layout was guided by the firsthand knowledge of local fishermen who have navigated these waters for years. By prioritizing input from those who rely on the area for speckled trout and trophy redfish, the team ensured the structure mimics the natural habitats favored by local species. Even as construction progressed throughout the summer, anglers reported consistent catches, signaling that the habitat remains a productive hub for the region’s marine ecosystem.
