IDrive e2 Integrates Model Context Protocol for AI Storage Access

Los Angeles-based cloud provider IDrive has launched support for the Model Context Protocol (MCP) across its e2 object storage platform. This integration allows AI tools like Claude, ChatGPT, and Cursor to interact directly with cloud-stored data using natural-language commands, bypassing the need for complex custom API scripts.

The new capability enables AI assistants and coding agents to connect to IDrive e2 buckets through a standardized interface. By adopting the open MCP standard, IDrive allows users to retrieve, organize, and manage content directly from within their preferred AI environments. The implementation emphasizes security by utilizing OAuth authentication, which removes the requirement to expose long-term storage access keys to third-party applications.

Raghavendra Prasad Meeniga, Vice President of Technology at IDrive, noted that the evolution of AI from conversational tools to active agents necessitates a shift in how cloud infrastructure is accessed. The platform aims to streamline workflows for developers who manage large datasets for machine learning, such as model artifacts and training repositories. Beyond connectivity, the service maintains its existing infrastructure features, including no egress fees and eleven 9s of data durability, while providing granular permission controls to ensure that AI agents only access designated storage areas.
