Highland Health Systems Proposes Settlement for 2023 Data Breach

A proposed settlement has been reached in a class action lawsuit following a 2023 cyberattack on Highland Health Systems that exposed the private information of U.S. residents. While the company denies any wrongdoing, the agreement aims to resolve litigation regarding the July 2023 breach that impacted unknown numbers of patients.

Eligible individuals may now file claims for compensation, including two years of medical identity protection and credit monitoring. Those affected can also seek reimbursement for up to $5,000 in documented losses or opt for a one-time pro rata cash payment of up to $85. Claims must be submitted online or postmarked by October 28, 2026.

Class members who prefer to pursue independent legal action must formally exclude themselves from the settlement by September 28, 2026. The same deadline applies to those wishing to file an objection to the agreement. The Honorable Jennifer G. Weems of the Circuit Court of Calhoun County, Alabama, is scheduled to preside over a final approval hearing on November 30, 2026. At that time, the court will also review requests for attorney fees and service awards for the named plaintiffs.
