BayCare Introduces Robotic-Assisted Mastectomy in Florida

Dr. Robert Gabordi, a breast surgical oncologist and medical director of BayCare’s breast surgery program, performed the operation using single-port robotic technology. One of only 10 surgeons nationwide trained on this platform, Dr. Gabordi led a multidisciplinary team that included plastic surgeon Dr. Melanie L. Aya-Ay to ensure immediate breast reconstruction. The technology provides enhanced 3D visualization and greater precision, allowing surgeons to operate through incisions as small as 2.5 centimeters. By preserving the nipple and surrounding skin, the approach aims to reduce scarring and minimize complications related to blood flow, potentially improving long-term body image for patients. The program’s implementation was supported by a $400,000 contribution from the St. Joseph's Hospitals Foundation.

For Kirtley, who was diagnosed with stage 2 triple-negative breast cancer in February 2026, the choice was guided by a history of care under Dr. Gabordi, including a 2019 lumpectomy. Following personalized immunotherapy and chemotherapy, she opted for the robotic procedure to balance effective cancer treatment with recovery quality. While the surgery is currently limited to select candidates with specific medical profiles, BayCare intends to utilize this robotic platform as a standard offering for patients facing both cancer diagnoses and high-risk preventive requirements.
