Researchers led by Professor Hyo-Jung Lee and Research Professor Yu-Jin Jo replaced outdated 2003 vegetation datasets with 2024 satellite observations to test their impact on air quality. By isolating these vegetation changes within the WRF-Chem and MEGAN models, the team discovered that modern greening patterns—marked by significant growth in parts of China and localized decline in Japan—directly shift the production of biogenic volatile organic compounds like isoprene.
The findings, published in Environmental Research, show that suburban areas face the highest risk of increased pollution. In these zones, the intersection of altered plant emissions and existing nitrogen oxide levels creates a perfect environment for secondary pollutant formation. Urban and rural areas showed lower sensitivity, either due to a lack of vegetation change or a shortage of the chemical precursors required for reaction.
