In a victory for the progressive wing of the Democratic Party, Sunrise Movement co-founder William Lawrence secured the nomination in Michigan's 7th congressional district. He overcame $4.5 million in outside spending by positioning himself against the rapid, unchecked expansion of artificial intelligence data centers across the state.
This strategy proved effective across party lines. An April poll from the Detroit Regional Chamber found that over half of Republicans share the concerns of Democrats regarding data centers located near their homes. By framing the issue as a struggle against unaccountable tech billionaires, Lawrence built a coalition that he plans to leverage against incumbent Republican Rep. Tom Barrett in November. His grassroots effort, which included knocking on over 100,000 doors, was bolstered by support from Sen. Bernie Sanders, signaling a continued shift in party dynamics as progressives challenge establishment figures in key battleground races.
