Wintermute Enters U.S. Regulated Markets with New Broker-Dealer

Wintermute has secured registration as a broker-dealer with the SEC and FINRA, signaling a strategic push into the regulated U.S. financial landscape. The move allows the firm's affiliate, Wintermute USA LLC, to engage in proprietary trading of traditional equities and equity options while positioning itself for the rise of tokenized securities.

The New York-based entity will now provide liquidity to national securities exchanges and OTC counterparties, operating under a formal regulatory framework. Beyond standard equity trading, the firm is authorized to act as an Authorized Participant for exchange-traded products, including those linked to digital assets. This capability allows Wintermute to self-clear transactions for its own proprietary account, a significant step in bridging the gap between traditional finance and the digital asset ecosystem.

Founder and CEO Evgeny Gaevoy emphasized that the firm’s long-term strategy relies on the deepening integration of traditional and digital markets. With the group already facilitating over $10 billion in average daily trading volume globally, the U.S. expansion reflects a broader shift in institutional trading, where firms must navigate diverse settlement rails and venues. The new local team in New York follows a period of sustained investment and engagement with American regulators regarding market structure and asset oversight.
