Airbnb accelerates product development with internal AI integration

While consumer-facing AI tools remain a measured experiment, Airbnb is utilizing artificial intelligence to overhaul its internal development pipeline. CEO Brian Chesky reports that the company has slashed the time required to conceptualize and ship new features by 60%, marking a significant shift in how the platform builds its infrastructure.

Airbnb accelerates product development with internal AI integration

The company has increased its output of new features and platform improvements by nearly 80% over the last six months compared to the same period last year. AI now handles approximately 60% of the company's code generation, streamlining workflows across core initiatives like search, checkout, and payment systems. This efficiency has also extended to host onboarding, where automated tools simplify the initial setup process for new property owners.

Despite this internal speed, Airbnb remains cautious about forcing AI onto users. The company is currently testing a new search function that allows for natural language queries, but it will debut as an optional toggle rather than a default interface. This tool aims to provide visual, conversational results without disrupting the traditional filter-based search users already know. Meanwhile, the platform has successfully deployed AI in customer support, where automated agents now resolve 45% of issues without human intervention. This shift has contributed to a 16% reduction in support costs per booking, bolstering the company's recent financial performance, which saw revenue climb 17% to $3.6 billion.
