Ravens Training Camp Offers Pediatric Patients a Day Off from Treatment

Five pediatric patients from MedStar Health traded hospital appointments for the sidelines at the Baltimore Ravens training camp in Owings Mills. The event provided children aged 5 to 11 with a rare opportunity to meet professional players, secure autographs, and step away from the rigors of chronic illness management.

For many of the children, the day served as a vital emotional reprieve. Among the attendees was five-year-old Sunny Thornton, a leukemia patient who reunited with her favorite wide receiver, Zay Flowers. Their connection, which began at the 2025 camp, has evolved into a supportive friendship; Flowers regularly wears a hoodie designed by Sunny during his pre-game warmups, while Sunny arrived this year with a personalized tackle box filled with gifts for the athlete.

Other families found similar comfort in the experience. Ryan Conrad brought his son Daniel, who underwent a liver transplant at age three to treat Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency. For parents like Conrad, the camp represents more than just a sports outing; it is a celebration of health and resilience after years of intensive medical care. MedStar Health, the official medical team for the Ravens since 2004, organized the visit to emphasize that emotional and social wellbeing remain central to effective pediatric recovery. Child life supervisor Katie Wallace noted that enabling these children to simply be kids provides a necessary boost that complements their ongoing physical treatments.
