Social Media Giants Face Thousands of Addiction Lawsuits

The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco has rejected a bid by Meta, TikTok, Snapchat, and Google to dismiss thousands of consolidated lawsuits. The companies sought protection under Section 230, arguing it shields them from liability regarding the addictive design of their platforms and failure to warn users.

These entities argue that tech platforms intentionally engineered their products to ensnare minors, prioritizing engagement over safety. While the outcome remains uncertain, recent history suggests a shift in judicial momentum. Meta has already lost two jury trials concerning child safety, marking a significant departure from the historical immunity tech giants have enjoyed under federal law.
