Kyoto Fusioneering to Build Fusion Fuel Prototype at Oak Ridge

With $121 million in backing, Kyoto Fusioneering is shifting its U.S. headquarters to Oak Ridge, Tennessee, to construct a prototype fuel breeding device. The project, supported by federal and state grants, aims to bridge the gap between theoretical fusion models and the hardware required for commercial power generation.

The startup is developing the Unity-3 device in partnership with the Oak Ridge National Laboratory to test breeding blankets, a critical technology that harvests heat while simultaneously generating tritium fuel. By bombarding liquid lithium with neutrons, the system creates the isotopes necessary to sustain reactor operations, a process currently limited to simulations. This hardware will allow firms like Realta Fusion, Thea Energy, and Xcimer Energy to validate their designs against physical testing data rather than relying solely on computer models.

Beyond fuel production, Kyoto Fusioneering is scaling up the infrastructure needed to turn experimental fusion into a grid-ready utility. The company is engineering specialized plasma heating systems, fuel recycling loops, and heat extraction components. By embedding itself within the Oak Ridge ecosystem, the firm aims to become the primary supplier for the broader fusion industry, which increasingly favors outsourcing specialized cycle technologies to established experts.
