OpenAI COO Brad Lightcap to Depart After Six-Year Tenure

Lightcap, a trusted lieutenant to CEO Sam Altman since their time together at Y-Combinator, joined OpenAI in 2018. He initially served as chief financial officer for four years before ascending to the COO role in 2022. Earlier this year, he transitioned into a special projects lead position as part of an internal executive restructuring.

In a message to staff, Lightcap reflected on his tenure building the company’s foundational teams, including legal, finance, and partnerships. While he offered few details regarding his next chapter, he suggested his future focus would address key challenges facing the industry. Lightcap remains an advocate for the company’s mission, noting he will support its progress from a different vantage point.

His exit follows a broader pattern of executive attrition at the firm. Recent departures include the exit of AGI development lead Fidji Simo, former Sora head Bill Peebles, and science vertical vice president Kevin Weil. These changes occur as OpenAI navigates a period of rapid organizational evolution ahead of a potential IPO.
