Northwestern Mutual Expands Next-Gen Advisor Ranks

Forbes and SHOOK Research have named 42 Northwestern Mutual financial professionals to their 2026 Best-in-State Next-Gen Wealth Advisors lists. This recognition highlights a shift in the firm’s strategy, as it doubles its presence on the industry ranking over the last five years to address a growing national demand for personalized guidance.

Northwestern Mutual Expands Next-Gen Advisor Ranks

The accolade arrives as the broader wealth management sector faces a demographic transition, with many veteran advisors nearing retirement. John Roberts, the company’s chief field officer, noted that the influx of younger talent provides a necessary bridge for clients struggling with high levels of financial anxiety driven by inflation and complex tax environments. The firm currently manages over $780 billion in assets and aims to fill thousands of advisor roles this year to help narrow the estimated $12 trillion protection gap.

To build this pipeline, the company relies heavily on a college internship program that feeds directly into full-time roles. Nearly two-thirds of these interns transition into permanent positions, often moving into leadership tracks. By focusing on early-career development, the firm is positioning itself to manage the $4 trillion retirement shortfall while attempting to stabilize the mental health concerns currently plaguing American investors.
