Investigators from Poland, Slovakia, France, and Taiwan demonstrated that applying specific wavelengths to tumor sites allows for controlled, localized destruction. This spatial targeting could eventually enable the treatment of accessible tumors via endoscopy or fiber-optic delivery, sparing healthy surrounding tissue from systemic exposure.
Beyond direct cell death, the research highlights the drug's capacity to induce immunogenic cell death. By triggering the release of danger-associated signals like calreticulin and ATP, the treatment helps the immune system identify and target tumor antigens. In preclinical mouse models, this mechanism translated into long-term tumor suppression, hinting at an in situ vaccine effect where a patient’s own tumor provides the template for an immune response.
