Tesla Plans $10 Billion Solar Manufacturing Hub in Texas

A 45-minute drive southwest of Houston may soon become the epicenter of Tesla’s energy production ambitions. The company has filed documents outlining Project Crystal Sun, a proposed $10.1 billion solar panel factory that promises to create 9,700 full-time jobs while anchoring the firm’s domestic manufacturing footprint.

Tesla Plans $10 Billion Solar Manufacturing Hub in Texas

Tesla is currently seeking tax incentives for the massive development, noting that Texas remains one of several potential locations under consideration across the U.S. Without these breaks, the company’s internal estimates place the property tax liability at roughly $1.1 billion over a 37-year span. Executives have set an aggressive timeline for the site, targeting a groundbreaking this year with full completion by 2028 and initial production runs beginning in 2029.

While the filings remain silent on the facility's exact annual output, the project aligns with the company’s broader goal to establish 100 gigawatts of U.S. manufacturing capacity by 2028. Whether these panels are intended for terrestrial solar farms or space-based hardware remains unconfirmed, though Elon Musk’s public interest in orbital infrastructure has fueled speculation regarding the factory’s ultimate purpose.
