IBM Taps OpenAI to Expand Enterprise AI Consulting Arm

The partnership creates a dedicated OpenAI practice within IBM Consulting, focusing on sector-specific solutions for finance, government, telecommunications, and retail. Mike Healy, managing partner at IBM Consulting, confirmed that the firm will retrain existing staff to master OpenAI’s Codex, API, and cybersecurity tools. This initiative includes the formation of a specialized unit dubbed 'Forward Deployed Experts' to handle complex client integrations.

IBM plans to embed OpenAI’s latest models, including GPT-5.6 and ChatGPT Work, directly into its proprietary AI platform, Consulting Advantage. This move aligns with a broader model-agnostic strategy where IBM pairs its own Granite models with third-party technologies to maintain flexibility for its clients. The alliance follows similar moves by OpenAI to secure distribution channels through IT giants like Infosys and Tata Consultancy Services.

For IBM, the deal arrives at a critical juncture following a downward revision of its 2026 revenue forecast. CEO Arvind Krishna continues to frame AI as a core long-term growth engine, insisting that these deployments stimulate demand rather than cannibalize the company’s legacy mainframe business. Beyond general consulting, the collaboration deepens a previous cybersecurity initiative, linking OpenAI’s models with IBM Autonomous Security to deploy multi-agent defenses for enterprise environments.
