Alzamend Neuro to Present Lithium Brain Imaging Data in Barcelona

Alzamend Neuro’s clinical-stage drug candidate, AL001, will take center stage at the upcoming International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine (ISMRM) workshop in Spain. Researchers are set to unveil first-of-its-kind pharmacokinetic imaging results that track how the novel organic lithium salt behaves within human brain tissue.

The presentation, scheduled for September 29, 2026, at the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya in Barcelona, follows a competitive selection process by the workshop's organizing committee. Dr. Ovidiu C. Andronesi, the study’s principal investigator and Director of Multinuclear MRI at the Martinos Center for Biomedical Imaging, will lead the 10-minute session. He will detail findings from a Phase 1/2A trial that utilized 7T MR imaging to visualize lithium concentrations, a methodology designed to bypass the limitations of traditional blood-level monitoring.

The trial employed a randomized crossover design to compare AL001 against standard lithium carbonate. By incorporating specialized head coils and advanced spectroscopy, the team captured data on how the drug reaches specific brain structures. According to Alzamend CEO Stephan Jackman, the oral presentation serves as a critical benchmark for the scientific validity of their approach, which aims to provide a better-tolerated lithium therapy for conditions including Alzheimer's, bipolar disorder, and PTSD. The findings confirm that AL001 matches the blood-level performance of traditional treatments while offering a potential reduction in systemic exposure.
