New 92 MW Battery Facility Goes Online in Kern County

A 92-megawatt, 368-megawatt-hour battery storage system has officially launched in Kern County, California. Developed by EDP Renewables North America and the Redwood Coast Energy Authority, the site is engineered to stabilize the power grid and provide enough energy to support more than 22,000 homes during peak demand periods.

The Sandrini Energy Storage project sits alongside the existing 300 MW Sandrini Solar site. Under a dedicated service agreement, the Redwood Coast Energy Authority will utilize 100% of the battery capacity to ensure renewable power remains available even when the sun is not shining. Beyond grid support, the installation acts as a significant economic engine for the region.

Local public services, including schools, emergency equipment, and road maintenance, are expected to receive over $5 million in tax revenue from the project. During the construction phase, the site created roughly 50 jobs, contributing to a broader employment footprint of 250 positions across the combined solar and storage operations. EDPR NA currently manages 1,230 MW of capacity throughout California, with this latest completion marking another step in the firm’s expansion of its regional energy portfolio.
