ABC Pulls Jimmy Kimmel Off Air Following FCC Pressure

First Amendment advocates are calling for a coordinated pushback against the Trump administration after ABC indefinitely suspended Jimmy Kimmel’s talk show. The move followed direct pressure from FCC Chair Brendan Carr, who threatened the network with regulatory action over Kimmel’s recent monologue regarding the murder of activist Charlie Kirk.

ABC Pulls Jimmy Kimmel Off Air Following FCC Pressure

The network’s decision materialized just hours after Carr suggested on a podcast that Disney, ABC’s parent company, needed to take immediate action against the comedian. Kimmel had sparked controversy during a Monday broadcast by criticizing the MAGA movement’s attempts to frame the suspect in Kirk’s killing as a leftist, rather than a member of their own ideological camp. Carr’s warning—that the FCC would intervene unless the network acted itself—left executives in a precarious position. According to reports from the New York Times and Rolling Stone, Disney leadership moved to cancel the show despite internal consensus that the host had not violated professional standards, citing the looming threat of administrative retaliation.

Corporate reactions were swift. Nexstar, which owns numerous ABC affiliates and is currently seeking FCC approval for a $6.2 billion merger with Tegna, preempted the show across its stations. Sinclair followed suit, further escalating the pressure by demanding that Kimmel issue a donation to Kirk’s organization, Turning Point USA. Craig Aaron, CEO of Free Press, characterized the environment as an abuse of power that replaces the rule of law with the whims of partisan actors. The cancellation arrives alongside other high-profile media shifts, including the upcoming end of Stephen Colbert’s program at CBS, which coincided with the approval of a multi-billion dollar merger involving Paramount. Critics argue these corporate concessions represent a dangerous pattern of capitulation, turning major media entities into vehicles for administrative control.
