LG Launches Integrated 5G Telematics for European Auto Market

A premium European automaker has begun deploying LG Electronics’ latest 5G R16-based telematics solution, marking the first time the hardware—which consolidates a communications module and up to 12 antennas into a single unit—has entered mass production for a production vehicle.

LG Launches Integrated 5G Telematics for European Auto Market

Traditional vehicle connectivity relies on a fragmented architecture of shark-fin antennas and separate control units. As modern cars demand support for V2X, multi-frequency GNSS, and 5G, the physical space required for these external components has created significant engineering hurdles. LG’s new design addresses this by housing the entire array within one unit, effectively stripping away the complex web of radio frequency cabling that typically adds weight and manufacturing costs to new vehicle platforms.

Built on the company's proprietary Automotive Telematics Platform, the system is designed for the software-defined vehicle era. The modular architecture allows automakers to separate or combine telematics and antenna boards depending on specific vehicle requirements, ensuring the technology can be ported across diverse lineups. By standardizing the software core, LG aims to simplify OTA updates and autonomous-driving data transmission while mitigating supply chain risks through multi-chipset support.

Eun Seok-hyun, president of the LG Vehicle Solution Company, stated that the solution shifts the industry toward a centralized communications platform rather than relying on distributed hardware. The unit has been validated for high-temperature durability, ensuring it maintains stable data transmission under the thermal stressors common in modern engine and battery compartments.
