PayPal and Venmo Expand Into College Tuition Payments

Students across the United States can now settle tuition bills using PayPal and Venmo, as the payment giants integrate their services with major campus platforms Illumia, Nelnet Campus Commerce, and TouchNet. This move brings familiar consumer payment tools to one of the most significant financial obligations for families.

PayPal and Venmo Expand Into College Tuition Payments

The integration allows users to pay directly through existing school portals at institutions such as Michigan State University, Texas Tech University, and Butler University. By embedding these options into the infrastructure already managed by Illumia, Nelnet, and TouchNet, PayPal aims to reduce friction in the payment process while maintaining standard security protocols like encryption and fraud monitoring.

This expansion builds on PayPal’s broader campus strategy, which gained momentum last year through partnerships with the Big Ten and Big 12 conferences. While those initial agreements focused on revenue-share payments for student athletes, the current rollout targets the broader student body. Frank Keller, President of Checkout Solutions at PayPal, noted that the company intends to provide the same flexibility for tuition that users already experience with everyday purchases. Executives at the partner platforms emphasized that adding these choices helps institutions modernize their financial systems without disrupting established back-end processes, ultimately aiming to keep students enrolled by simplifying the payment experience.
