GOP Memo Warns Silicon Valley That AI Data Centers Are Political Poison

Artificial intelligence infrastructure has become a toxic political liability, according to a leaked National Republican Senatorial Committee memo. The document suggests that data centers are now viewed by voters with the same hostility as nuclear waste, threatening to fracture the party’s long-standing pro-tech coalition ahead of the 2026 midterms.

GOP Memo Warns Silicon Valley That AI Data Centers Are Political Poison

The warning centers on the Senate race in Ohio, where opposition to data centers has become a defining issue. The committee fears that if the campaign against these facilities gains traction in a state that favored Donald Trump by double digits, the sentiment will ripple across the country. Internal polling cited by the GOP indicates that only 27% of Americans would welcome an AI facility in their neighborhood, while 62% remain opposed. This makes them significantly less popular than nuclear power plants, which hold a 34% approval rating.

Tech executives are reportedly in a state of panic as they struggle to craft a message that resonates with a skeptical public. The backlash has already begun to pierce party lines, with Wisconsin gubernatorial nominee Tom Tiffany publicly opposing new construction in his state. Pollster Adam Carlson noted that the industry's attempt to launch charm offensives now appears reactive and hollow. Because firms failed to engage communities proactively, they are likely too late to reverse the damage, leaving the industry to face a growing movement that views their expansion as a threat to local utility costs and environmental stability.
