Shanghai Electric Sets Biomethanol Bunkering Record at Yangshan Port

A record-breaking 8,000 metric tons of biomethanol were pumped into a vessel at Shanghai’s Yangshan Port on August 17, marking the largest single bunkering operation of its kind. The fuel originated from the Taonan facility in Jilin, highlighting the operational readiness of China’s new interprovincial green energy corridor.

The operation, branded as "Green Fueled Globe, Lead the Future," involved a collaboration between Shanghai Electric, the Shanghai International Port Group, and CMA CGM Group. It validates the logistics of a supply chain connecting production in Jilin with storage in Dalian and final delivery in Shanghai, a route officially launched in June to support international shipping.

At the heart of this supply chain is Shanghai Electric’s Taonan project, which utilizes local wind and solar energy alongside biomass feedstock. The facility leverages proprietary process systems to synthesize green methanol, positioning itself as a vital component in the efforts to decarbonize maritime transport. Looking ahead, Shanghai Electric is moving to expand these capabilities through its Taonan Phase-II project, which aims to integrate green hydrogen with biomass gasification to support both maritime and aviation fuel sectors.
