PrimeBOT Q1 Debuts in Edinburgh Fringe Theatre Production

The Edinburgh Festival Fringe has introduced a distinct experimental collaboration, featuring PrimeBOT Q1 as a core performer in the production Love in the Cracks. This marks the first time the humanoid robot has stepped onto an international stage, signaling a shift in how embodied AI interacts with live performance arts.

Co-created by Beijing Star Excellence Technology Co., Ltd. and the Central Academy of Drama’s Intermedia Directing Art Lab, the project moves beyond simple automation. Unlike robots running static, pre-scripted loops, Q1 functions as a dynamic partner. Its compliant force control technology allows the machine to yield upon contact and respond to actors with fluid, nuanced movements. The production team utilized an open developer console to integrate the robot into their full rehearsal workflow, refining its blocking and postural responses to achieve a natural chemistry with the human cast.

This performance highlights PrimeBOT’s ambition to evolve from a domestic assistant into an open creative platform. By providing tools for motion choreography and custom behavioral logic, the developers intend for the robot to serve as a new medium for choreographers and interdisciplinary artists. Having previously appeared at the United Nations AI for Good Summit and secured a Gold award at the A' Design Award in Milan, PrimeBOT now positions itself as a versatile tool for public space performance and experimental theater, further testing the boundaries of human-robot coexistence.
