New Zealand-based Vessev is launching its U.S. expansion backed by $19 million in new funding, signaling an aggressive push into American transit markets. The Series A round was led by Blackbird Ventures, with participation from GD1, Rypples, and previous backers including K1W1 and Icehouse Ventures. This capital infusion is earmarked for ramping up serial production of the company’s flagship VS–9 passenger vessel and advancing its proprietary onboard software and telemetry systems. Vessev also intends to establish a manufacturing footprint within the United States to support its growth strategy.

FlyTahoe plans to deploy the VS–9 to mitigate traffic congestion around Lake Tahoe, where daily vehicle trips between the North and South Shores can reach 20,000. By shifting transit to the water, the operator aims to provide a faster, zero-emission alternative that bypasses traditional road bottlenecks. The project remains subject to final permits from the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency.

To showcase the technology’s capabilities, Vessev has scheduled a series of high-profile activations. The tour begins in New York City ahead of Climate Week, followed by a September showcase at the Washington, D.C. Navy Yard. Demonstrations will conclude at Lake Tahoe, where the company will highlight the vessel’s ability to operate with minimal wake and high efficiency. The VS–9, which utilizes foil designs inspired by America’s Cup racing, is already commercially certified and operational in New Zealand, boasting a range of up to 50 nautical miles.
