Utah explores nuclear microreactors with Deployable Energy
A standard 20-foot shipping container could soon house a nuclear power plant in Utah, following a memorandum of understanding signed August 18 between the state’s Office of Energy Development and Deployable Energy. The agreement initiates a feasibility study for siting the company’s 1 MWe Unity nuclear batteries within the state.

Emy Lesofski, Director of the Utah Office of Energy Development, described the memorandum as a move toward a more reliable and secure energy future. While the agreement remains non-binding, it establishes a formal framework for information exchange and research. Deployable Energy, which claims its microreactors have already reached criticality and hold an Approval In Principle from a maritime classification society, views the Utah project as a key step in shifting nuclear power from complex, long-term construction projects to mass-manufactured, off-the-shelf energy products.
