With ¥2.6 billion in fresh capital, Sapporo-based Letara is pivoting from small satellite thrusters to large-scale rocket systems. The startup aims to capitalize on Japan’s aggressive push to build a homegrown aerospace sector, targeting commercial, defense, and security markets with its proprietary hybrid propulsion design.

Co-CEO Shota Hirai noted that the company is specifically addressing the historical technical hurdles of hybrid propulsion: thrust generation, performance stability, and combustion control. As the global hybrid rocket market climbs toward a projected $2.6 billion valuation by 2032, Letara is positioning itself against a crowded field of international competitors, including Germany’s HyImpulse and South Korea’s InnoSpace. The company has already secured undisclosed contracts from private rocket firms and the Japanese government, with an upcoming in-orbit firing test serving as the next critical step toward full commercialization.
