Flock CEO Seeks Middle Ground Amid Surveillance Backlash

Garrett Langley is pushing for a national compromise between public safety and individual privacy as his company, Flock Safety, faces mounting scrutiny. The CEO’s call for balance follows documented instances of police officers misusing the firm’s surveillance technology to stalk partners, fueling bipartisan political opposition and urgent calls for regulation.

Flock CEO Seeks Middle Ground Amid Surveillance Backlash

The Washington Post recently uncovered 46 incidents where law enforcement personnel leveraged Flock’s license plate recognition and camera systems for personal harassment rather than public safety. While Langley has apologized to victims, he maintains that the technology serves as a tool for accountability, arguing that the company is merely exposing long-standing issues of police misconduct. Critics remain unconvinced, noting that the company’s internal safeguards, such as its "Evidence Mode," allow users to bypass default data retention limits at will.

Opposition to the surveillance network has bridged the partisan divide. Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed has criticized the proliferation of these cameras as a threat to personal autonomy, while Senator Bernie Sanders has explicitly called for an end to AI-driven mass surveillance. Simultaneously, House Republicans have introduced legislation aimed at barring federal agencies from acquiring systems that utilize biometric or license plate tracking. Although Flock has moved to shorten its default data retention periods, organizations like the American Civil Liberties Union have labeled these adjustments as potential public relations maneuvers, emphasizing that true reform depends entirely on how the company restricts administrative overrides.
