Oura Targets $16 Billion Valuation in September IPO

Smart ring maker Oura is preparing to raise $3 billion in a U.S. initial public offering scheduled for next month. If successful, the move will push the 900-person company’s valuation past $16 billion, a significant leap from the $10.9 billion figure it secured during a funding round last September.

The company, which maintains offices in San Francisco and Finland, confirmed it filed confidentially for an IPO in May. Investors are expected to offload a substantial portion of their holdings during the offering, signaling high demand as the wearables market intensifies. Oura faces increasing pressure from competitors like Samsung, which debuted the Galaxy Ring, and Whoop, a fitness band manufacturer recently valued at $10 billion after pivoting toward broader health and hormone tracking.

Despite the impending public offering, Oura is currently navigating legal headwinds. A proposed class action lawsuit filed in San Francisco last week challenges the accuracy of the company’s sleep-tracking metrics, specifically questioning claims regarding the device’s ability to pinpoint exact sleep stages. An Oura spokesperson rejected these allegations, noting that while the ring is not a clinical medical device, its sleep-staging technology has been validated against polysomnography, the industry gold standard. The company intends to contest the claims in court.
