Caliber Public Safety Launches AI Tool to Cut Police Report Writing

The Narrative Draft Assistant, integrated into Caliber's Online RMS platform, pulls existing case data—such as offense details, property information, and involved parties—to build a structured report framework. This shift from a blank page to a pre-filled draft has already seen adoption by 34 agencies during its pilot phase. The system is designed to keep officers in the field, allowing them to focus on community engagement rather than paperwork.

To ensure accountability, the technology employs a human-in-the-loop design. The AI-generated drafts contain placeholders that force officers to review and manually finalize the content before submission. Users must formally acknowledge the use of AI assistance and verify the accuracy of the document. Bill Chapman, an RMS Senior Analyst at Caliber, emphasized that the tool is intended to provide a head start rather than a finished product, maintaining the officer's professional judgment as the final authority.

Beyond drafting, the system streamlines the approval process. Supervisors can use a side-by-side comparison feature to track edits between original submissions and revised versions. Security remains a priority, with the platform hosted at Nlets data centers that adhere to FBI CJIS standards. Josh Bryant, Director of Product Management, noted that the feature was developed in direct response to practitioners who identified narrative translation as the most time-consuming hurdle in their reporting duties.
